I thought that the subject of networking was a very valuable one. It's certainly one that shy, ole me is having to work really hard on since going freelance (ah, the joy of employment often meant not having to actually talk to people - heaven for an introvert like me!).

I've written some more, including examples of what networking has achieved for me, here.

I'm really waking up to the importance of just *talking* to people :-)

Oh ye gods, yes! Network, network, network. But most importantly, network with people who *don't* have the same skills as you do. There are various IT social events where you get offered the chance to "network" - with people who have the same skillset as you do. Useless. You're far more likely to find a useful contact at the hairdressers or the bus-stop.

But, all of this is of little use unless you can remember who it was who was skilled in what. Either you take detailed notes, or you have the sort of memory than can retrieve this sort of information. I'm lucky, I seem to have the latter, plus a list of other people's needs also held in memory. (Though it has to be said that the latter sometimes gets a little behind the times. I spotted a sewing gadget in a shop once, knew I was supposed to be looking for it for *someone* but couldn't remember who. When the connection surfaced, I realised she'd been dead ten years.)
