So, I went along to the new Leadenham Folk Night (the organiser is avoiding the phrase "folk club" because of it's connotations of regularity and his astonishingly full diary, I suspect) and it was fun :-)

I needn't have worried, as it was a very small and friendly gathering of mostly performers. The evening ended up a LOT like a filk circle, complete with dead animal songs and Frank Hayes disease :-) As we were following a bardic pattern, I got to sing three songs - "Dead Men Walking", "Temple Bruer" and "Leaves of Life". All three went down very well, including a gratuitous, "Ooooh, pretty!" for the new harp from a lady I got talking to afterwards.

Turns out that she's always fancied playing a harp, and was on the point of moving so as to be closer to a harp teacher before the Credit Crunch bit hard, and she stayed put. I've discussed the fact that I can loan her a small harp for the purposes of experimentation, and who knows, maybe it'll follow up into something else! I made her sit and noodle with the Harpsicle for a while, and she had that unique glow that harp-dreamers usually get the first time you actually plonk one in their hands. She just lit up, and it was lovely :-) Ended up discussing the possibility of putting together a "baby band" session somewhere nearby for the purposes of learning a new instrument and new tunes in good company. One of the dads at the school gate is a beginning fiddler, and has expressed an interest in something similar, too. Yay!

When combined with the fact that J. did an admirable job of babysitting, and was happy to earn some money for Christmas presents, I think we might be doing this again! Any nearby (or willing to travel) bods who might want to come along for a yodel, let me know and I'll clue you in as to the next one (probably in the new year as Christmas is just mad for everyone).

Yay!
