Well, after a couple of weeks of solid work, we have a mixed CD of our Christmas Carol/Piepowder material. We have 12 tracks which come in at just over 35 minutes all tolled - we aren't fond of carols which go on forever, and several of them are purely acapella, which shortens tracks when compared to the more usual "instrumental introduction, verse, 4 bar verse intro, chorus, middle 8, verse, chorus, instrumental, verse, chorus, instrumental outro" arrangement of tracks.

We're very happy with this as a marker in the sand of where we are at the moment, and the arrangements that we use. It's a good "live" sound, with Tim having resisted the urge to slap reverb on it (I love reverb, he hates it. He won.) and it is extremely representative of what we sound like. I'm particularly pleased with the rendition of "Good King Wenceslas" (with the surprising instrumental), "The Holly and The Ivy" (different tune to normal, and why, yes, we do all listen to the Watersons, how could you tell?), "The First Nowell" (a waltz as sung by "The Flying Pickets") and "Whilst Shepherds Watched..." (it shouldn't fit to that tune, but it does - how could we resist?).

We're now in the stage of listening to it on a variety of different music systems to hear how it does across the sonic board. Our kitchen stereo is incredibly bassy, and made all the plosives sound very... plosive-y... We await a report on Liam and Frank's car stereo....

Speaking of which, Liam (the Unfeasibly Tall Melodeon Player) is off travelling in the United States from the middle of this week, and will be charting his travels and studies (it's a grant-funded academic trip researching song and dance traditions) on his new Livejournal blog. We're very excited by it all, although whether the US is ready for Liam is a point of some concern. As long as he can survive for that long in a country where the porkpie has, as yet, to be discovered and lauded, remains to be seen... If you are interested in community song or dance and how they can be used to bring people together, please feel free to friend him, follow his progress and comment on his blog :-)
