stevieannie: (Good Life)
It's been a nice week so far - bright and fairly warm, so I've felt stirred into action. So far, I have:

  • Mowed the bottom lawn so that I could get to the washing line.
  • Dug over last year's courgette bed, and planted onion sets in it.
  • Sorted out the garden shed so that only half of it is used for stored kids' garden toys and patio furniture, and the rest is a real, honest to goodness potting shed.
  • Lagged the el-cheapo greenhouse with leftover bubble wrap to stop up the multitude of small holes kocked in the plastic during this year's gales.
  • Dug over beds in greenhouse.
  • Planted tomatoes, leeks, lettuce and peppers in my valentine propagator.
  • Planted mixed salad leaves in an old orange box in the greenhouse.
  • Planted courgettes.
  • Planted Talis' magic beans.

I'm feeling quite happy with my garden progress, and may consider doing an hour or so at the allotment today, after I've baked some cheese scones, to see if I can finish my bed-in-progress, and maybe dig a weeny little asparagus bed, as I succumbed to the Dark Side of the Force last time I was in a garden centre and bought some asparagus crowns.

My potatoes are chitting slowly on the windowcill - if only I had them in a plastic bag, in the veggie basket under the sink, I could guarantee huge great shoots! It's depressing when the spuds you plan to eat chit better than the carefully arranged and lit ones :-(

And what am I eating out of the garden at the moment? Well, the perpetual spinach is living up to it's name - every mealtime is greeted by pouts and sulks that we don't have ricotta and perpetual spinach gnocchi AGAIN, which is the current favourite du jour, and has to be eaten at LEAST once a week. My overwintered turnips ("Feuille de Navarre" I think) are looking yummy and Ellie has taken to picking them from the garden and bringing them in, demanding that they go in whatever I'm cooking. Jared isn't wildly keen on unadulterated turnip as he finds it a bit peppery, but I can usually stick it in soups and stews without him complaining. My overwintered broccoli was going fine but had a sulking fit and went all leggy and flowery overnight before I picked it. Grrr! I shall have some sideshoots, just to spite it! I haven't pulled any carrots yet, as they were a bit of an experiment in late summer sowing, and were too small last time I checked. The tops are looking better now, but I'd rather wait and have proper sized carrots in late spring :-P As soon as more things pick up speed, I shall be have some hedgetip salads (hawthorn and lime are meant to be yummy!), but I want to let the trees get into their strides first.

Oh, how I ADORE spring :-D
