Argh!!!

There's no way I'm going to be flying unless I can take a frodding book with me. I'm a kender by nature - I don't cope well with boredom. Honestly, I think that a bored Jared, Annie and Ellie let loose on a plane would be more of a security risk than any maddened terrorist. The three of us would be chewing our way out of the fuselage in under an hour...

However, in happy news, I have now got my Ashford Traditional spinning wheel back into working order, courtesy of Bill and Sue Chitty at:

http://www.handspin.co.uk

I'm now looking forwards to spinning the Alpaca fleece I bought on holiday :-) I was highly amused to be questioned by a member of the public as I was buying it -

"What are you going to do with *that*?" she asked, incredulously.
"I'm going to spin it, and maybe make a soft jumper for my daughter with it."
"Really? You can DO that?"
"Errrr... Yes. That's why I bought it. You should try it - spinning is very relaxing."
"I didn't know anyone could still do that!"
*Annie smiles and wanders away*

Yeah, I'm thinking...no books? No gameboys for the kids? They'll have more of a threat than they think!

Ashfords are nice. I have a Kromski Mazurka that I need to get back into shape. And I have both alpaca and merino to spin on it. Been using a drop spindle for my spinning for the most part, though. And even that seems to confuse people.

[livejournal.com profile] tattercoats has the most wonderful post about her experiences with a "craft group" who maintained that nobody span or wove anymore - it had completely died out apart from 2 or 3 people in Wales....

I almost snorted tea when I read that :-)

Oh, dear.

Yeah, I can't tell you how many times I hear that sort of thing. Then there are the people who cannot fathom why I would knit socks when I can buy them at the dollar store.

Out of interest, why are books banned anyway?
PS s-a did you mean the entry about the harpys in the wool shop?

The impression I get from the list of what is allowed is that they haven't banned books as such, they have permitted the absolute minimum of essentials and blanket banned *everything* else.

That's what it is, yes. The UK has, for once, been more draconian in silly measures than the US has.

Must be the Ministry of Silly Measures.

Or just John Reid doing an "anything not compulsory is forbidden".

I'm bemused by the ban on books, too. Presumably there's an Al Quaeda training camp teaching people how to make bombs disguised as the complete works of Mercedes Lackey, as we speak. *sigh*.

And yes, the harpy post was the one I was thinking about - I giggled a LOT when I read it :-)

Flight stuff

BBC news at 10 covered this and said that once airside you can buy books etc (even drinks) though taking liquids on USA bound flights is not allowed. I can't see this mentioned on any of the government sites (typical) but the BBC reporter said that despite the restrictive list of things allowed in the plastic bag people seemed unaware that items (he stressed books and reading material) could then be purchased airside. The significant threat of bored parents and kids must have got through .

Me too on the flying thing. We'll see what happens by FKO next year, but if they still have that ban then I doubt many of us will be going (I have no intention of flying anywhere until then)...
