Survivalist Dichotomy.
Jan. 15th, 2008 11:35 amLast Christmas, I bought Tim a flint and steel (we watch a lot of Ray Mears in this house) - one of those fab swedish army ones. It is really easy to get a spark with it, but rather difficult to do anything useful with the spark that you get. We've tried sparking onto all sorts of different tinder, but nothing seems to catch like it does on the telly. However, I have just found the *perfect* tinder!
Tumbledrier lint!!!
It catches first time and it easy to transfer to the fire. Love it!
However, slight problem - if society dies to the extent that there are no matches or lighters, I find it difficult to believe that there will still be tumbledriers... Ditto with making fire in the middle of the wilderness - where's the tumbledrier?
Ah. Oh well, it's still fun feeling all Mears-like and striking one's own spark. Gives even further ownership of the fire if you've made the spark really primitively (tumbledriers excepted, of course).
