Had a pleasant evening, but it didn't involve plans of electric sockets at all.

After a conversation with Mike via SkypeChat, I ended up playing Fleetwood Mac's "Time" album (still unmemorable, Bekka Bramlett obviously wants to be Aretha when she grows up, and can't quite understand why the hordes of Stevie fans never really took to her), and then the CD changer put on one of the FM backing track CDs I bought from Ebay a while back.  Tim was singing along, and complaining that he couldn't hit any of the high notes without his voice cracking seriously.  So we started working through his technique.

Now, I'm an opinionated person, and if I've ever seen you sing, I probably have a theory on how you could make it easier on yourself, or achieve more clarity or... something.  But, because I understand that opinionated people have a tendency to get thumped on a regular basis, I keep these thoughts to myself.  In the interests of fairness, I adore better singers critiquing my own performances - it was part of what I loved about recording the FFM demo - our sound engineer knew more than I did about voice production and he came up with some great tips which have improved my own performances,  I think.

But still, I'm waffling, sorry.

The great thing with one's own partner is that you can usually say, "Yes, your bum looks big in that, and you sound like a doofus" without them thumping you so that the marks show...  In fact, Tim was really up for a singing lesson.  So that's what we did last night.

I got to tell him what I really thought of his voice and his technique, and where one was limiting the other.  He listened.  We worked on some approaches, and by the end of the evening, he was producing a good 3 or 4 notes higher than he had been able to before.

It was a fun evening, and it was really satisfying to be able to see Tim achieve results from what I was telling him.

Hee!
