Another day, another gig.
Jul. 23rd, 2006 12:54 pmThis time it was at the Black Swan at Donington. Stage the same size as a postage stamp. Slightly later finish than normal - when *will* landlords figure out that getting a long license and asking the band to take a longer than normal break between sets does NOT mean that people drink more? They simply drink the same amount and leave before the second set. *sigh* Still, the pub was heaving for the first set and still pleasantly full for the second - but I think we would *all* have been happier doing our "Good Barns Yard" routine of "wee and a drink break of 12 minutes whilst CD pumps out 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and then straight back in."
Sound-wise I was *really* happy with this gig - using my Audio-Technica mic is working very well. Rich can get a good clear monitor sound that really allows me to hear what I'm doing vocally. Musically we were all feeling a lot more together than at the last gig as well - Mike managed to break 2 strings on ONE song. Tres impressive! He managed to play most of the solo on "I'm So Afraid" with only 5 strings. I didn't even notice where the second break occurred, so I was very impressed - especially considering that it was his top E (which features quite prominently in this band...). At the end of the night, I did our usual outro routine, and announced him as "Mike Whitaker, the only man to play an entire Lindsey Buckingham song with only five strings!" - he got a HUGE cheer and whoop :-) It's always nice when the audience is on your side!
Even 5+ years after this band's inception, we are still working on new and better stage moves, and I was particularly happy with Mike's decision to abandon his microphone and work with me on mine during "Silver Springs". I got to smoulder at him very impressively, and he was emoting right back. It's way too much fun to do this on stage and mess with the audience's heads - "which one is she married to?" "is he sleeping with her?" etc. Funfunfun! Of course, it takes out all the fun when the audience figures out that all the married members of the band are Vanilla Monogamous Christians, but we don't tell 'em that!
Many, many thanks to Jess (Godmother extraordinaire) who babysat all the kids for us whilst we gigged.
